Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. Rising from the desert sands like a mirage, the fort is made of yellow sandstone, which glows golden in the sunlight. Within the fort’s massive walls lies a labyrinth of narrow streets, ancient havelis, temples, and shops. Patwon Ki Haveli
Patwon Ki Haveli is a cluster of five havelis built by a wealthy merchant, Guman Chand Patwa, and his sons in the early 19th century. These havelis are renowned for their intricate carvings, extensive mirror work, and beautiful frescoes. The architecture showcases the grandeur and opulence of the bygone era. Today, parts of the haveli are open to the public and house museums displaying artifacts and artworks from the region.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Another architectural marvel, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, was built in the early 18th century by Salim Singh, the then prime minister of Jaisalmer. The haveli is famous for its distinctive roof, which resembles a peacock, and its 38 balconies, each with unique designs. The haveli’s architecture is a blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal styles, making it a must-visit for architecture enthusiasts.
Sam Sand Dunes
Located about 40 kilometers from Jaisalmer, the Sam Sand Dunes are the quintessential desert experience. The vast, undulating sand dunes provide a perfect setting for camel safaris, jeep rides, and enjoying the sunset. The dunes come alive during the annual Desert Festival, which features folk dances, music, camel races, and other cultural performances.
Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake is a man-made reservoir constructed by Maharawal Gadsi Singh in the 14th century. Surrounded by temples, ghats, and cenotaphs, the lake offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Boating on the lake provides picturesque views, especially at sunrise and sunset. The lake is also a popular spot for bird watching, attracting migratory birds during the winter months.
Bada Bagh
Bada Bagh, meaning "Big Garden," is a complex of cenotaphs or chhatris dedicated to the royal family of Jaisalmer. Located on a hilltop, the cenotaphs are built with yellow sandstone and offer a serene and picturesque setting. The garden provides a panoramic view of the surrounding desert and is a peaceful place to reflect on the city’s rich history.
